If you are new to prosthetics, Cornell Orthotics & Prosthetics can help. Our team understands this is a new experience for you, and we hope to ease your transition as much as possible. Immediately after your procedure, with your doctor’s permission, we apply a PSRD (Polyethylene Semi-Rigid Removable Dressing) to protect your limb from accidental bumps, bangs or falls.
Once sufficiently healed, we design a custom, temporary (preparatory) prosthesis to use as your residual limb continues to mature in size and shape. Your temporary prosthesis will help you get back up and moving. You will be seen frequently during this time in order to make adjustments to the prosthesis to accommodate the residual limb changes and maintain proper fit and function. Your experience with this first prosthesis will serve as a very effective yardstick to help determine your individual needs and abilities along with helping us design your next prosthesis. Prosthetic care is a continued process of evaluating your needs and abilities and changing the prosthesis as required to best meet them. Don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions.
