Orthotic services cover a vast array of disabling conditions which limit our patient’s ability to be mobile and participate in their desired activities. The goal of orthotic management is to restore pain free normal gait, restore balance and stability, and facilitate healing of injuries and surgical procedures. Orthotic management typically is prescribed for restoring function to common conditions that result in weakness and deformity. Bracing can restore normal gait and balance in all but the most severe cases. Dynamic carbon AFOs allow for elimination of foot drop. Restoration of all 3 stance phase rockers including heel strike and heel rise for propulsion. Dynamic ground reaction provides balance throughout stance phase. This requires training and proper fitting. The results have been leaps and bounds over past orthotic strategies.
